RE: Replace carpet in 5th with 3 slides with vinyl or pergo

We did it... We replaced all carpet with vinyl planks and are very happy with the results. We used a good adhesive throughout and did not rely on the self-stick planks. For protection from the slide rollers we cut out some heavy aluminum plates from old street signs (don't tell) for the rollers to ride on when retracting. When we extend the slide-out we store the plates until retracting again. When the slide is extended the rollers are sitting on a small plate that is attached to the floor with screws. This enables them to be at the same height as the temporary plates. Good Luck & Happy Trails

A/C Freeze-up

A/C froze up last night. Dometic 13,500 rooftop. We were in the AZ desert and temps were 100 +. I shut down the compressor and left the fan running and the ice melted quickly. No more problems yet. What causes this to happen? Any preventative maintenance suggestions? Not fun to have no A/C in the desert. Thanks

RE: Leaving a 5'ver in AZ for the summer

Ditto on the water jugs... I used 5 gallon buckets in the bathroom and living area. If you don't do this the woodwork will shrink and crack, wallpaper will peel and calking will crack. Also, be sure to add water to all p-traps and put a capfull of cooking oil in them to prevent evaporation. Add lotsa water in the toilet and a capful of cooking oil. This will help protect the toilet seal. Turn off the gas at the bottles and disconnect the batteries and service them. There is some disagreement about leaving a vent slightly open. If you leave it open it will allow some of the heat to escape... but it will allow dust to enter. Your choice. Happy Trails

RE: Bad Smell From Kitchen Sink

If your vent is working ok the water in your P-trap may be evaporating while in storage. When this happens odors will pass through the trap. A solution to evaporation is to add a capfull of cooking oil to the drain... the oil will coat the top of the water and prevent evaporation. Don't forget the bath tub and sink. Happy Trails

RE: Rear casters

Casters won't hang up if you take the curb at an angle. If you don't have casters then you run the risk of dragging the bottom. Could be a lot worse than hanging up on casters. JMHO.

RE: Honda eu2000i...Best Price?

Hi Doc If you are concerned about power during storm blackouts, maybe you should consider a 3000 in order to run your RV air conditioner. When I lived in Louisiana we retreated to our 5er after huricanes when the power was out, sometimes for days .... a real lifesaver in that heat & humidity. Also, Wise Sales ships free and fast.

RE: Potable Flat Hose

Hey code3run The Wally World flat hose in my post rolls up with no problems. I have seen others that are a real pain to roll up though. As I mentioned, try it and if you don't like it return it for a full refund. Happy Trails

RE: Potable Flat Hose

Are you talking about the flat hose with a fabric covering??? If so, don't waste your $$$$$. I bought an all vinyl (white with blue stripe and blue reel)at Wally World for about $20 and it seems to be just fine. It doesn't kink or snag on everything like the fabric one did and it can be used without unrolling it completely. Best of all, Wally World will refund your $$$ if not satisfied. Happy Trails

RE: S.O.S. update...my bad...(blush, blush #$@%&*)

The following happened to my ex-wife and her new husband (both very nice people). While RVing in Alaska they headed to another destination about 300 miles down a gravel road. After about 150 miles a pouring thunderstorm hit them with buckets of water. In their new Tundra the passenger side window was down when all this started. The window would not raise when the button was pressed. All fuses were O.K. and everything else worked fine. They turned around and headed back to the Toyota dealership in Fairbanks. When they got there, the technician turned off the passenger window lockout switch on the drivers side door and the window suddenly was fixed. Imagine their embarassment! I don't think I would have told anyone if it happened to me. Don't sweat the small stuff and have fun. Happy Trails

RE: Goodyear Marathon Warranty

Hi Charlie I've had success dealing with Goodyear warranty people. First you need to go to your local Goodyesr dealer with the tire remains and get tire wear info from them. If you're really lucky, they will handle everything for you. Probably not! Take pictures if possible and call or e-mail Customer Service. Document everything. They refunded my $$$$ and paid for damage to my 5er...... TWICE (two seperate claims). Happy Trails Geaux Tigers !

RE: Very Strange Goings on with our Tanks and Gauges

Hi Linder My cheapo system did the same thing until I had to drop one of the tanks for floor repairs. When I disconnected the wires from the sensor terminals I found heavy corosion on the connections. When I re-installed the tank I cleaned the terminals, connected them and sprayed a heavy coating of varnish to prevent more corosion. Now for the first time they work properly. If you have access to the terminals check 'em for corosion before spending big bucks. Happy Trails

RE: How to test brakes...left to right

ralexis wrote on how to adjust the brakes a NOTE of advice do not back off the star adjustment untill the wheel turns freely the manual for adjustment states 3/4 of a turn back off, if you dont the brakedrums will get hot and you will smell them when you stop. Thanks, you're correct about the 3/4 turn but it's almost impossible to determine exactly what 3/4 turn is through that little access hole. If you back off till the shoes are clear of the drum and rotate freely (no scraping sound when the wheel is rotated) there will be no drag to heat the drums. If you have the manufacturers data and instructions then you can simply count the notches or clicks. Happy Trails

RE: A question re: Septic tanks ?

Residential toilet? Bypass holding tank? What a bunch of crap. Not if their plan is to stay in one place all the time. There are some seasonals in our campground that are set up this way. Of course if they plan to move around alot then it's not practical. Hey packerbacker Using your rationale, they may as well remove the hitch, wheels and tail lights too. Sounds like they need a condo or mobile home or something other than a camper. Dumping a black/grey tank is super easy if you're already hooked-up. Just MHO. Happy Trails

RE: How to test brakes...left to right

Each wheel has an adjustment for brake shoe travel. If all of the magnets are engaging correctly but brake shoes are not contacting the drum with the same force they must be adjusted. 1st., jack up the wheel till it clears the ground and check that it rotates freely. There is a "star" wheel inside the drum that is accessed by removing a rubber plug from the backside of the drum. Simply rotate the "star" wheel with a common screwdriver (or a brake tool) until the brake engages fully and the tire will not rotate. Back off the "star" wheel until the brake just disengsges and the tire can rotate freely. You want the brake shoe to just barely clear the drum until the brakes are applied. Adjust the remaning wheels the same and you will have equal braking on all wheels. This sounds more complicated than it really is, so don't get discouraged. I find it easier to jack both wheels on a side at the same time. Be sure to block the axles so the whole mess doesn't come toppling down on you. Happy Trails

RE: Flag Lights

This subject bothered me while at NASCAR a few years ago. Lotsa flags flying 24/7 without lights. To show my respect for our flag, I decided to illuminate mine, but didn't know how. DW suggested I attach a garden solar light to the top of the flagpole. Wallah! It worked, and only for a few bucks and maintenance free. God bless our flag (and God bless DW). Happy Trails
